The state of Vermont is in the New England region of the Northeastern United States of America. It is the only state in the New England region with no coastline along the Atlantic Ocean. Originally inhabited by Native American tribes (Abenaki and Iroquois), much of the territory that is now Vermont was claimed by France but became a British possession after France's defeat in the French and Indian War. For many years, the surrounding colonies disputed control of the area (referred to at the time as the New Hampshire Grants) especially New Hampshire and New York.
Vermont's official state flag was adopted in 1923. The flag features Vermont's coat-of-arms on a field of deep blue. The coat-of-arms pictures a large pine tree, a cow, bales of hay, and sheaves of wheat . Vermont's mountains are pictured in the background. A stag's head is mounted over the scene. Boughs of pine needles wrap around the coat-of-arms. "VERMONT" and the state's motto, "FREEDOM AND UNITY," are written on a red ribbon under the scene.
